Digital PR for SEO and AI Search: What Works, and What Google Calls Link Spam
Digital PR is earning coverage from publishers, journalists and other websites by giving them something worth covering. For years it was sold as a smarter way to get links. AI search changes the value: the publications that cover you are now the sources AI answers are built from. That makes earned coverage worth more, and makes the line Google draws between earned and bought more important to understand.

01Why Now
Why digital PR matters more in AI search
AI answers lean on third parties. In our nine software teardowns, about 70 percent of the brands ChatGPT recommended did not rank in Google's top ten for the question. Their place in the answer came from review sites, comparison pages and publishers. In our four-industry study, ChatGPT's most-cited sources were publishers such as NerdWallet, WIRED and RTINGS, and bodies such as the American Bar Association.
Those are PR targets. Coverage in them shapes how AI systems describe a brand, which brands they list, and which they choose. See brand mentions for the difference between being named and being picked.
02The Rules
Where Google draws the line
Google's spam policies (updated August 28, 2026) define link spam to include:
- buying or selling links, including exchanging money, goods or services for links or for posts that contain links;
- sending someone a product in exchange for a post with a link;
- requiring a link as part of a contract without letting the site owner qualify it;
- links with optimized anchor text in articles, guest posts or press releases distributed across other sites.
Paid placements are allowed if the links are qualified with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". Google's site reputation policy also notes that wire services, press releases, syndicated news and editorial content are not violations. Since May 2026 Google says its spam policies apply to its generative AI answers too.
03What Works
Digital PR that earns coverage
- Original data. Journalists cover numbers they cannot get elsewhere. Every teardown we publish is built to be cited, with the dataset attached.
- Expert commentary. Fast, specific answers to reporters working on stories in your field.
- Useful tools and resources. Calculators, benchmarks and reference pages that other sites link to because they help their readers.
- Accurate profiles on the sources AI cites. Review sites and directories are not glamorous PR, but they are often the most-cited sources in a category's answers.
- Relevance over reach. A mention in the publication your buyers read, and that AI answers cite, beats a syndicated release on a hundred sites nobody visits.
04Measuring It
How to measure digital PR now
Links and referral traffic still count. Add two measures: whether the outlets that covered you are among the sources AI answers cite in your category, and whether your recommendation share moves in the months after. Bing Webmaster Tools added AI citation reporting in 2026, and Google's Search Console now shows AI feature impressions; see AI Overviews tracking. Digital PR planned against those sources is part of every AI SEO program we run.
05FAQs
Frequently asked questions
What is digital PR?
Earning coverage, mentions and links from publishers and other sites by giving them something worth writing about: original data, expert commentary, useful tools or a genuine story. It is PR aimed at the web, measured partly by search results.
Is digital PR the same as link building?
They overlap, but the goal is different. Link building targets links. Digital PR targets coverage, and links follow when the story is good. Google's spam policies treat buying links, or trading money or products for links, as link spam.
Does digital PR help with AI search?
Yes, and more directly than it helped classic SEO. AI answers are built from third-party sources: in our software teardowns, most of the brands ChatGPT recommended did not rank for the question themselves. Being accurately described in the publications and review sites it cites is how you get into the answer.
Are press releases bad for SEO?
No. Google says wire services and press releases are not site reputation violations. What it calls link spam is press releases, guest posts or articles stuffed with keyword-rich links. Publish news that is real and let links be natural.
