HIGH SALIENCE / METHODOLOGY
The Methodology
Category Salience.
Salience is how readily your brand comes to mind, and to machines, when the category is invoked. Category Salience is our methodology for measuring it, engineering it and converting it into revenue.
01The Premise
What is Category Salience?
Category Salience is High Salience's framework for measuring how consistently a brand appears, matters and gets selected across the commercial questions, search results, AI answers and third-party sources that shape a buying category.
Put differently: category salience is how readily a brand comes to mind, and to machines, when its category is invoked: how often it is found, cited and recommended across search results, AI answers and the third-party sources that shape both. It is not a ranking. It is the accumulated result of five layers working together, from buyer demand through retrieval, authority and sources to revenue.
Categories are decided upstream of your website. By the time a buyer lands on your site, most of the deciding has happened: in search results, AI answers, review platforms, comparison articles and communities. The brands that win are the ones that are salient across that whole environment, not just optimized on their own domain.
The Root Concept
Be the brand buyers think of.
Brand salience, in classic marketing science, is the probability that a brand comes to mind when a buying situation occurs. If your category is being considered and your name isn't mentally available, you've lost before the search begins.
Category Salience extends that idea to the machines now sitting between buyers and brands. Memory is no longer only human. Search indexes, entity graphs and AI answers remember too, and unlike human memory, they can be engineered.
02The Five Layers
From a buyer's question to your revenue.
DEMAND What buyers ask
The commercial query universe: category, problem, comparison, alternative, recommendation and validation intent, weighted by what each cluster is worth. If you don't know the questions, you can't win the answers.
RETRIEVAL What gets found
Whether search and AI systems can find, index, extract and quote the right information: pages, passages, rankings and technical accessibility. Retrieval failures are silent; nothing reports the answer you weren't in.
AUTHORITY What gets trusted
Links, citations, entity relationships, expert evidence and brand demand. Machines recommend brands the web corroborates. Authority is what makes your claims safe to repeat.
SOURCES Who shapes the answer
The publishers, review sites, comparison sites, communities and directories that recur as citations in your category. Presence in the source layer is presence in the answer.
CONVERSION What becomes revenue
Recommendation to branded search to visit to demo to pipeline to customer. First-party revenue data defines the KPI. A campaign that ends at "ChatGPT mentioned us" isn't finished.
03Measurement
How Category Salience is measured
Six measurements. No mystery score. We deliberately don't compress salience into a single trademarked number. Precision theatre makes strategy worse. Instead, every engagement tracks six separate, inspectable measurements:
| Measurement | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| Recommendation Share | When buyers ask for recommendations, how often are you named? |
| Commercial Search Coverage | Across the query universe, where do you appear at all? |
| Source Presence | Are you represented in the sources that shape category answers? |
| Citation Presence | Do AI answers cite documents that represent you accurately? |
| Entity and Brand Presence | Do machines resolve who you are, consistently? |
| Competitor Gap | Where do rivals hold ground you can realistically take? |
Each is measured against a defined query set with a stated sampling window. Every number we report can be re-derived from the data behind it.
04The Distinction
Category Salience vs search visibility
Rankings measure page position. AI visibility measures appearances inside generated answers. Category Salience measures presence across the decision environment: the search results, AI answers, review platforms, comparisons and communities a buyer crosses between the first question and the signed contract. A brand can rank well and still be unrecommendable; it can appear in answers and still lose the validation step. Salience is whether you keep mattering at every point where the decision can tip.
05Operating Loop
Map. Intervene. Remeasure.
The methodology runs as a loop, not a project plan. We map the category, rank interventions by leverage, execute the top of the list and remeasure. Interventions that move the measurements get more investment; ones that don't get cut. The map is the contract between us and the client: everyone can see what moved and what didn't.
That's High Salience.
PRESENT WHEN THE BUYER ASKS.
PRESENT WHEN SEARCH RETRIEVES.
PRESENT WHEN AI RECOMMENDS.
PRESENT WHEN THE DECISION GETS MADE.
