GEO vs AEO: Is There Really a Difference?
GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) describe almost the same work: getting your brand cited and recommended in AI-generated answers. They came from different places, AEO from featured snippets and voice search, GEO from a 2023 research paper on generative engines, and they still differ slightly in emphasis. For a buyer the practical answer is simple: treat them as one program and judge vendors on how they measure it, not what they call it.

01Origins
Where each term came from
AEO came first. As Google added featured snippets and voice assistants began reading out single answers, marketers needed a name for the work of being that answer. The emphasis was on concise, direct responses to specific questions.
GEO was named in a 2023 paper by researchers at Princeton and IIT Delhi, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, which studied how content can raise its visibility inside answers written by large language models. The emphasis there is on how systems synthesize one answer from several sources, and which content they choose to include.
Both terms now point at the same surfaces: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.

03The Honest Answer
Does the difference matter?
For strategy, barely. The measurement row in the table above is identical, and so is the work that moves the numbers: pages that answer buyer questions plainly, accurate presence in the sources answers draw on, crawler access for the right bots, and a strong organic foundation. Digiday has described the terms as meaning the same thing, and the AI visibility platform Profound argues they are interchangeable.
Where the emphasis difference shows up is in how a vendor thinks. An AEO-minded team tends to focus on question-and-answer content on your own site. A GEO-minded team tends to put more weight on third-party sources and evidence. Our data suggests the second matters a great deal: across seven software categories we studied, between 46 and 83 percent of ChatGPT's recommended brand mentions went to brands whose own site did not rank in Google's top ten for the question. Our GEO vs SEO guide has the category-by-category table.
04What Works
What moves results under either name
- Say it plainly. Who the product is for, what it costs and how it compares, stated where buyers and systems will find it.
- Use evidence. In the original GEO study, adding quotations, statistics and cited sources raised visibility in generated answers by up to 40 percent; keyword stuffing did little.
- Earn corroboration. Accurate, current presence on the review sites, comparison pages and publications that answers in your category cite.
- Keep the foundation strong. Google says its AI features sit on its core ranking systems, so organic SEO still comes first.
- Measure recommendations. A fixed question set, run on a schedule, coded for recommended versus merely listed.
We run all of it as one AI SEO program, and our GEO agency page explains the service side.
05Buying
How to choose a vendor when the labels blur
Ignore the acronym on the proposal and ask four questions:
- Which AI surfaces do you track, and how often?
- How do you tell a recommendation from a mention?
- How do you handle answers that change from run to run?
- What do you do off-site, and how is it measured?
A vendor with clear answers to those is doing the work, whatever they call it. We compared how 18 agencies in this market position, price and disclose their methods in AI SEO agencies compared.
06FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO a part of GEO?
You can read it either way. AEO is older and grew from featured snippets and voice answers; GEO is newer and focuses on generative systems. Today both cover AI-generated answers, so in practice they describe the same program with different starting points.
What does GEO mean in marketing?
Generative engine optimization: improving how often and how favorably a brand appears in answers written by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. It is unrelated to geographic or local targeting, which sometimes shares the abbreviation.
Can I use GEO instead of SEO?
No. Generative engines retrieve from the same web that search engines rank, and Google says its AI features rely on its core ranking systems. GEO without solid SEO leaves the engine nothing good to retrieve.
Which term should I use when hiring?
Use whichever your team understands, and judge vendors on what they measure rather than what they call it. Ask how they separate recommendations from mentions, which surfaces they track, and how they handle answers that change between runs.
Are AIO and LLMO different again?
Mostly labels. LLMO frames the same work around language models. AIO is ambiguous: some people mean AI optimization in general, others mean Google's AI Overviews. Ask which one is meant.
