Knowledge Panels: How Google Creates Them, How to Claim One, and Why They Matter for AI Search
A knowledge panel is the information box Google shows beside or above search results when you search for a known person, company, place or thing. You cannot buy one or apply for one. Google generates it from its Knowledge Graph when it has enough reliable information. What you can do is make that information clear and consistent, claim the panel once it appears, and fix what it gets wrong.

01How They Work
How Google creates knowledge panels
According to Google's help pages, knowledge panels are generated automatically for entities in the Knowledge Graph. The information comes from sources across the open web, from data partners that license authoritative data on subjects such as films and music, and from verified entities who suggest changes to their own panel.
Google says it does not manually create or remove knowledge panels. One appears when there is enough information available. That is why two similar companies can get very different treatment: one has consistent facts across its website, profiles and independent coverage, and the other does not.
02Claiming
How to claim and edit your panel
- Find the panel. Search for your company or name and open the panel.
- Claim it. Select "Claim this knowledge panel" and sign in with an official profile Google associates with the entity, such as YouTube or Search Console. Google notes that not every panel can be claimed yet.
- Suggest edits. Once verified, use "Suggest edits" and include links that support the change. Google says it usually reviews suggestions within a few days.
- Fix descriptions at the source. The short description cannot be edited in the panel. If it is wrong, correct the source it came from.
- Everyone else: anyone can report a problem through the Feedback link on the panel.
Structured data helps too. Google says Organization markup can influence which logo appears in results and in the knowledge panel.
03Getting One
How to make a knowledge panel more likely
- One clear entity. Use the same name, description, logo and founding facts everywhere: your site, company profiles and directories.
- An about page that states the facts. Who you are, what you do, where you are, who runs it. Mark it up with Organization schema, including sameAs links to your official profiles.
- Independent coverage. News coverage, industry publications and reputable directories are the kind of open-web sources the Knowledge Graph draws on.
- Consistency over volume. Contradictory facts across sources make an entity harder to resolve. Clean them up before chasing more mentions.

04AI Search
Why this matters beyond Google
A knowledge panel is a visible sign that Google has resolved your brand as a distinct entity with known attributes. AI systems face the same problem: before they can recommend you, they need to know who you are, what you do and who you are for. Brands with clear, consistent entity information are easier to describe accurately and easier to recommend. That is why entity work is an early step in any AI SEO program.
New in 2026: Google added Search profiles in the US for people with large followings on YouTube, Instagram, X or TikTok. Google says creating one does not directly affect ranking. For most businesses, the knowledge panel remains the thing to get right.
05FAQs
Frequently asked questions
How do I get a Google knowledge panel?
You cannot apply for one. Google creates knowledge panels automatically when there is enough reliable information about a person, business or thing on the web. The work is making that information consistent and easy to find.
How do I claim my knowledge panel?
Search for the entity, select "Claim this knowledge panel" on the panel and sign in to an official profile Google lists for it, such as your YouTube channel or Search Console property. Not every panel can be claimed yet.
Can I edit the description in my knowledge panel?
No. Google says descriptions come from other data sources and cannot be edited directly. To change the description, fix it at its source.
Does a knowledge panel help with AI search?
Indirectly. A panel shows Google already understands your brand as a distinct entity with known facts. That same clarity helps AI systems describe you correctly, which is the foundation of being recommended.
How long does it take to get a knowledge panel?
There is no timeline. It depends on how much consistent, independent information about you exists online. Brands with coverage on respected sites, a clear website and consistent profiles tend to get one first.
