Entity SEO: How to Make Search Engines and AI Describe Your Brand Correctly
Entity SEO is making sure search engines and AI systems recognize your brand as a distinct entity and describe it correctly: what you are, what you do, who you serve and how you relate to your competitors. It matters more in AI search than it ever did in classic SEO, because an AI answer does not send people to your homepage to find out. It tells them what you are, in one sentence, based on whatever it read.

01The Idea
What an entity is
Search engines stopped treating text as strings of words a long time ago. Google's Knowledge Graph, introduced in 2012, models real-world things and the relationships between them. Your company is one of those things, with attributes such as a name, a website, a founding date, products and leadership.
Language tools score entities too. Google's Cloud Natural Language API gives each entity in a text a salience score from 0 to 1 for how central it is to that text. The practical point: a page that is clearly about your brand, and consistent with every other page about it, is easier to understand than one that mentions you in passing.
02How To
How to do entity SEO
- Write one canonical description. One or two sentences that say what you are and who you serve, used consistently on your site, profiles and directory listings.
- Add Organization markup to your homepage. Google's Organization structured data documentation lists properties such as name, url, logo, description and sameAs, and says the markup helps Google understand your organization and tell it apart in search results.
- Link your profiles with sameAs. Point to the official profiles that describe you, such as LinkedIn, X or a Wikipedia article if one exists, so systems can connect them to the same entity.
- Mark up people and products too. Author pages with Person markup, and product pages with accurate product details, give systems clear facts about the entities around your brand.
- Claim your knowledge panel if you have one. Google's knowledge panel help explains how to claim it by verifying through an official profile.
- Fix third-party facts. Directory listings, review sites and comparison pages are where wrong descriptions usually come from. Correct the ones that rank or get cited for your name.

Why entities matter more in AI answers
An AI answer compresses your brand into a label. In our teardowns, ChatGPT attached short "best for" labels to every brand it recommended, and those labels decide which buyers it sends where. Kit was "creators/newsletters", Wave was "very small businesses". Our brand pages show the labels for more than 70 software brands.
Those labels come from the sources the model reads, and most of them are not yours. Across our 2,311 ChatGPT citations, about half pointed to third-party pages (AI citations). Entity work that stops at your own site leaves most of the description to someone else. Doing it across the sources that matter is part of AI SEO.
04FAQs
Frequently asked questions
What is an entity in SEO?
A distinct thing a search system recognizes, such as a company, product, person or place, along with its attributes and relationships. Google introduced its Knowledge Graph of entities in 2012.
Do I need schema markup for entity SEO?
It helps. Google says Organization markup helps it understand your organization's details and tell it apart from others in search results. It is not required for AI features, and it only helps if it matches what is on your pages.
How do I get a knowledge panel?
Google creates knowledge panels automatically for entities it recognizes. If one exists for you, Google's help pages explain how to claim it by signing in and verifying through an official profile. Consistent information across your site and major profiles makes recognition more likely.
Why does ChatGPT describe my company wrong?
Usually because the sources it reads disagree or are out of date: an old directory listing, a stale review, a competitor's comparison page. Fix the facts on your own site first, then correct the third-party pages that rank or get cited for your name.
