AEO vs SEO: How Answer Engine Optimization Differs From Search Engine Optimization
SEO earns your pages a place in search results. AEO, answer engine optimization, earns your content a place in the answer itself: the featured snippet, the voice response, or the AI-generated reply that sits above the links. The two share almost all of their foundations. They differ in what counts as success, how content is judged and how you measure progress. This guide covers each difference and how to run both without doing the work twice.

01Origins
Where AEO came from
Answer engine optimization is older than the current AI wave. Google started showing featured snippets, the boxed answer above the regular results, in 2014, and voice assistants followed with spoken answers that name only one source. Marketers began using the term AEO for the work of winning those single-answer spots.
Generative AI widened the target. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode now write answers that cite several sources and often name several brands. AEO today covers all of those surfaces, which is why it overlaps so heavily with generative engine optimization. For the service side of this, see our answer engine optimization page.
02Side by Side
AEO vs SEO at a glance
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages and earn clicks | Be the answer, or be cited and recommended in it |
| Main surfaces | Google and Bing results pages | Featured snippets, voice assistants, AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity |
| What gets judged | The whole page against competing pages | Whether a clear answer to the question exists on the page, plus what other sources say about you |
| Typical winning content | Comprehensive pages that satisfy a query | Pages that answer a specific question directly and credibly |
| Success metric | Rankings, traffic, conversions | Citations, recommendations, then traffic and conversions |
| Click behavior | The click is the point | Many answers end the search without a click |
03Shared Ground
What AEO and SEO have in common
Answer engines do not invent their sources. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in the same core ranking and quality systems as regular Search, and that standard SEO best practices still apply. ChatGPT search retrieves pages through OpenAI's search crawler. So the pages that answer engines use are, overwhelmingly, pages that could also rank: crawlable, indexed, relevant and trusted.
That is why most AEO programs that skip SEO stall. There is nothing for the engine to retrieve.
04Differences
Where AEO and SEO actually differ
The unit of success is smaller
SEO wins or loses a whole page for a query. AEO wins or loses a specific answer: a sentence that defines something, a line that says who a product is for, a price, a comparison. If that answer is buried or missing, a strong page can still lose the answer box. This is not a case for chopping pages into fragments, which Google says is unnecessary. It is a case for saying the important thing plainly.
Other sites decide more of the outcome
An answer engine building a recommendation reads several sources, often review sites and comparison articles rather than your own pages. In our help desk teardown, 255 of 336 recommended brand mentions in ChatGPT went to brands whose own website did not rank in Google's top ten for that question. The evidence behind those recommendations lived elsewhere.
Being named is not the same as being chosen
SEO has a clean outcome: a position. AEO has several. Your brand can be recommended, listed without being picked, or mentioned in passing. In our payment processing teardown, PayPal appeared in 50 answers and was recommended in 18, while Stripe appeared in 73 and was recommended in 53. Counting appearances alone would hide that gap.
Clicks are no longer guaranteed
A good ranking still sends visitors. A good answer may satisfy the question on the spot. That makes AEO partly a brand exercise: being the name a buyer remembers from the answer, and checks later.
05In Practice
How to do both at once
- Start from the questions. List the commercial questions buyers ask in your category. The same list drives keyword targeting and answer tracking.
- Answer each one plainly on the right page. Definitions near the top, pricing where people expect it, honest comparisons that say when a competitor is the better fit.
- Keep the technical foundation clean. Indexing, internal links, page speed and crawler access in robots.txt serve both.
- Earn accurate third-party coverage. Reviews, comparison pages and publisher mentions feed rankings and answers alike.
- Measure both, together. Rankings and recommendation share side by side, for the same questions and competitors.
That combined program is what we run as AI SEO, and our guide to AI search engine optimization goes deeper on each step.
06Pitfalls
Common mistakes
- Treating AEO as a formatting trick: FAQ blocks everywhere, extra schema, content split into fragments.
- Dropping SEO work to fund AEO, and weakening the pages answers are drawn from.
- Reporting mentions as wins when the brand is rarely the one recommended.
- Checking one question once and drawing conclusions. Answers vary between runs.
07FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Will AEO replace SEO?
No. Answer engines, including Google's AI Overviews and ChatGPT search, retrieve from indexed web pages, so they depend on the same crawlable, relevant, trusted content that SEO produces. AEO changes what you aim for on top of that foundation, not the foundation itself.
What is AEO in digital marketing?
Answer engine optimization is the work of getting your brand and content used as the answer when someone asks a question, whether in a featured snippet, a voice assistant or an AI-generated response. It is usually measured by citations and recommendations rather than rankings.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They overlap almost completely. AEO grew out of featured snippets and voice search; GEO comes from 2023 research on generative engines. Our guide to GEO vs AEO covers the small differences that remain.
Does AEO need special schema markup?
Not for Google. Google says there is no special schema.org markup required for its AI features, and it retired FAQ rich results in May 2026. Accurate structured data is still good practice, but it is not what earns answers.
How do I measure AEO?
Pick a fixed set of questions your buyers ask, run them on each answer engine on a schedule, and record whether your brand is cited, recommended, listed or absent. Compare against Google's top ten for the same questions so you can see where the two diverge.
Should a small business invest in AEO or SEO first?
SEO first, in almost every case. It is the layer answer engines draw from, and it still carries most measurable search demand. AEO becomes worth separate attention once buyers in your category are asking AI tools for shortlists.
