Google AI Mode SEO: How AI Mode Picks Sources and How to Show Up
Google AI Mode answers complex questions by running many searches at once and writing one response with links. Google says there is nothing special to do to be eligible: be indexed and eligible for a snippet. What decides whether you are one of the links is how well your pages answer the narrower questions AI Mode searches for, and whether the sources it trusts describe you.

01How It Works
How AI Mode builds an answer
Google introduced AI Mode as a Search Labs experiment on March 5, 2025, and began rolling it out to everyone in the US at Google I/O on May 20, 2025.
It uses a technique Google calls query fan-out: breaking a question into subtopics and issuing many searches at once, then bringing the results together into one answer. For a site owner that means AI Mode is not matching your page to the question as typed. It is matching it to the narrower questions hidden inside it.
02Eligibility
What Google says you need
Google's AI features and your website documentation sets out the rules:
- A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.
- There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary.
- You do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup.
- Traffic from AI features is counted in Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type.
So the entry ticket is ordinary technical SEO: crawlable, indexable pages without snippet restrictions.
03Our Data
Where Google's AI answers get their links
We have not measured AI Mode directly, but we have measured AI Overviews, which Google says follow the same eligibility rules and also use query fan-out. On 700 commercial software questions, an AI Overview appeared for 647. Of their 2,395 source links, only about half, 55 percent, came from domains that ranked in Google's top ten for the same question, and YouTube was the most-linked site of all (the full note).
That fits what fan-out implies. The links are chosen for the sub-questions, so a page that ranks for none of the main query can still be cited for a narrow part of it, and a top-ranking page can be left out.
04How To
How to show up in AI Mode
- Get the basics right. Indexable pages, no nosnippet restrictions on content you want used, fast and accessible.
- Cover the sub-questions. For each important question, list the narrower questions an expert answer covers and make sure you have a clear page or passage for each. See how to rank in AI Overviews for the same approach applied to Overviews.
- Think beyond text. Given how often video is linked in Google's AI answers, clear product and comparison videos are worth considering for categories where buyers watch before they buy.
- Be described well elsewhere. Third-party pages supply most of the links. Make sure the review and comparison sources in your category describe you accurately.
- Measure with a fixed question set. Search Console does not separate AI Mode traffic, so track visibility directly by running your key questions on a schedule.

Putting it together
AI Mode is one part of Google, and Google is one part of AI search. A program that treats them together, with separate measurement for each surface, is what we call AI SEO.
06FAQs
Frequently asked questions
What is Google AI Mode?
A conversational search mode in Google that answers complex questions with an AI-written response and links. Google launched it in Search Labs in March 2025 and began rolling it out to everyone in the US in May 2025.
Do I need special optimization for AI Mode?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary. A page has to be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet.
How do I see AI Mode traffic?
Google says traffic from its AI features is included in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type, together with other search traffic. It is not broken out separately.
Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?
They share the same eligibility rules and both use query fan-out, but AI Mode is a separate, conversational experience for longer and follow-up questions, while AI Overviews appear at the top of regular results.
