How to Rank in Google AI Overviews: What Google Says and What Works

There is no separate ranking system for Google's AI Overviews. Google says a page is eligible to appear as a supporting link if it is indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimizations. So ranking in AI Overviews comes down to ranking well for the related searches Google runs behind the answer, and being the clearest source on the specific point it is making. Here is how that works in practice.

01Mechanics

How AI Overviews choose their links

Google's documentation on AI features explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out: issuing several related searches across subtopics, then writing an answer and linking to supporting pages. Because of that, the links can come from a wider and more varied set of pages than the classic top ten for the original query.

That has a useful consequence. You do not need to rank first for a broad head term to be linked. You need to rank for one of the narrower questions the fan-out produces, and be the best page on that point.

02Eligibility

The only requirements Google publishes

  • The page is indexed. Check it in Search Console's URL Inspection tool.
  • It is eligible to show with a snippet. A nosnippet directive, or a very low max-snippet value, removes it from consideration.
  • Googlebot can crawl it. robots.txt rules for Googlebot are the main control. Google-Extended, which governs Gemini model use, does not affect Search.

Google adds that there are no additional technical requirements, no special markup and no AI-specific files. Its separate AI optimization guide also says you do not need to break content into chunks or rewrite it for AI.

03What Works

How to earn AI Overview links

1. Map the fan-out

Take a question your buyers ask and list the sub-questions it implies. "Best CRM for a small real estate team" fans out to pricing, ease of use, real estate features, integrations and comparisons. Each is a search you could rank for.

2. Answer each sub-question plainly

Make sure one of your pages answers each sub-question directly, near the top of a relevant section, with the specifics: numbers, conditions, who it suits. Vague pages rarely get linked because they do not support any particular sentence in the answer.

3. Strengthen the pages that already rank

Pages on page one for the sub-questions are your best candidates. Improve their clarity and accuracy, update stale facts and tighten internal links to them.

4. Build authority the ordinary way

AI Overviews sit on Google's core ranking systems, so the usual signals still matter: helpful, original content, a site other sites reference, and a clear sense of who is behind it.

5. Cover AI Mode at the same time

Google applies the same eligibility rules to AI Mode, which is designed for longer and more complex questions. The pages you build for AI Overviews serve both.

04Measurement

How to tell if it is working

Search Console will not show AI Overview traffic separately: Google says it is included in the overall Web search numbers. So track it directly. Keep a fixed list of questions, check monthly whether an AI Overview appears and whether you are linked, and note which of your pages is used.

Expect fewer clicks than a classic top ranking would bring. In the Pew Research Center's study, people clicked a traditional result on 8 percent of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15 percent without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on just 1 percent. The value of being linked is partly the visit and partly being the name the reader sees. Our guide to zero-click search covers what that means for measurement.

05Pitfalls

Common mistakes

  • Adding schema, FAQ blocks or llms.txt files in the hope of an AI Overview boost. Google says none is required.
  • Using nosnippet to protect content, then losing both AI Overview links and rich snippets.
  • Chasing the broad head term only, instead of the narrower questions the answer is built from.
  • Judging success by Search Console clicks alone.

07FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is there a separate ranking system for AI Overviews?

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems. They use query fan-out to run related searches, then show links from what those searches return, so there is no separate AI ranking to optimize for.

Does structured data help me appear in AI Overviews?

Google says there is no special schema.org markup needed. Keep structured data accurate for rich results, but do not expect it to earn AI Overview links by itself.

Can I stop my content appearing in AI Overviews?

You can limit it with the same snippet controls used for regular results, such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet. Be aware they also limit how your page appears in normal search results.

Is AI Mode different from AI Overviews for SEO?

Google applies the same eligibility rules to both: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. AI Mode is built for longer, more complex questions, which tend to fan out into more sub-searches and give well-covered sites more chances to be linked.

How do I see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?

You cannot isolate it. Google says traffic from AI features is included in the overall Web search numbers in the Performance report. Use a fixed question set to track whether you are linked.

Do AI Overviews appear for every search?

No. In a Pew Research Center panel study of March 2025 browsing, 18 percent of the Google searches analyzed produced an AI summary. They are more common for longer, question-style searches.
