AI Visibility: What It Is and How to Measure It Properly
AI visibility is how often, and how favorably, your brand appears in answers from AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode when buyers ask about your category. Most of the numbers sold under that name blur three different things together. This guide separates them, explains why single scores mislead, and lays out the measurement method we use in our published research.

01Definition
What AI visibility actually measures
AI visibility is the share of relevant AI answers in which your brand shows up, and the role it plays when it does. "Relevant" is doing a lot of work in that sentence: the answers that matter are the ones to questions your buyers ask on the way to a purchase, not every prompt that happens to contain your category name.
It sits alongside classic search visibility rather than replacing it. The two overlap, because AI search features retrieve from the same web, but they drift apart more than most people expect. Our GEO vs SEO guide shows by how much in seven categories.
02Metrics
Three metrics, not one
Presence
How many answers name your brand at all. This is what most dashboards report. It is useful, but on its own it flatters brands that get listed in every comparison table and chosen in none.
Recommendation share
Of the answers that name you, how many actually select you for a stated case. This is the number that tracks buying decisions. In our payment processing data, Stripe appeared in 73 of 100 answers and was recommended in 53, a recommendation share of 73 percent. PayPal appeared in 50 and was recommended in 18. Paychex, one of the largest payroll companies in the country, was chosen in 5 of the 29 payroll answers that named it.
Citation share
How often your own pages are among the sources an answer links to. Citations show which content the system is reading. In payroll, gusto.com was cited in 65 of 100 answers, 48 of them for questions that never mentioned Gusto. That is a brand whose content has become the reference for the category.
Report all three, side by side, against the same named competitors. Any one of them alone tells a partial story.
03Pitfalls
Why single AI visibility scores mislead
- They sample, they do not observe. Every tool runs its own prompts. Different prompts, sample sizes and refresh schedules produce different numbers for the same brand on the same day.
- Answers vary between runs. Ask the same question twice and the brands can change. One run per question is an anecdote.
- They mix up mentions and recommendations. A brand listed and never chosen can score well.
- A zero rarely means zero. It means that tool's prompts did not surface you in that window. Treat hard counts from any single tool with caution.
None of this makes the tools useless. It means you should compare trends within one tool, and trust your own fixed question set over a vendor's headline score.
04Method
How to measure AI visibility yourself
This is the method behind our published teardowns. It needs a spreadsheet and some discipline more than it needs software.
- Write the question set. 50 to 100 questions in your buyers' words, split across category questions ("best X for Y"), comparisons ("A vs B"), alternatives ("alternatives to A") and direct recommendation requests.
- Fix the rules before you look. Decide what counts as recommended (selected for a stated case), listed (named without being chosen) and passing. Write it down so every run is coded the same way.
- Run it on each surface you care about, with the same settings each time, and save the full answers and cited links.
- Pull a control. Record Google's top ten for the same questions so you can see where AI answers and rankings agree and where they do not.
- Repeat monthly, and compare against the same competitors each time.
If you would rather have it done for you, this is exactly what the Category Salience Brief delivers, and ongoing tracking is part of our AI SEO program.
05Improving It
What moves AI visibility
Once you can measure it, the levers are the ones covered in our AI search engine optimization guide: a strong organic foundation, crawler access for the right bots, pages that state plainly who you are for and what you cost, and accurate presence in the third-party sources your category's answers cite. The measurement tells you which of those to fix first.
06FAQs
Frequently asked questions
What is a good AI visibility score?
There is no universal one. Scores depend on the prompts a tool runs, how often and on which surfaces, so two tools can score the same brand very differently. Judge yourself against named competitors on the same question set, and watch the trend over time.
Why do AI visibility tools give different numbers?
Because they sample. Each runs its own prompts against models that answer differently from one run to the next. A low number means their prompts did not surface you, not that you never appear. Compare within one tool, not across tools.
How many prompts do I need to track?
Enough to cover the ways buyers actually ask: category questions, comparisons, alternatives and direct requests for a recommendation. We use 100 per category in our teardowns; 50 is a workable start for most companies.
How often should I measure AI visibility?
Monthly is enough for most brands. Answers shift with model updates and new content, and weekly checks mostly capture noise unless you are testing a specific change.
Can I improve AI visibility without changing my website?
Partly. A large share of what answers draw on sits on other sites: reviews, comparison articles and publishers. Improving your accurate presence there can move recommendations. But your own pages still need to state clearly who you are for and what you cost.
