ChatGPT Ads: How Advertising in ChatGPT Works, and How It Differs From Being Recommended

ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements that OpenAI shows below ChatGPT's answers for users on its free and low-cost plans. They launched as a US test in February 2026 and grew quickly. They are also easy to misunderstand: an ad sits under the answer, it does not change the answer. For brands, that makes ads and organic recommendations two separate channels.

02How It Works

Who sees ads, and where

According to OpenAI's help center:

  • Ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans do not include ads.
  • Ads are not shown to users under 18.
  • Ads appear below the end of a response and are labeled as sponsored.
  • Ads are not placed near sensitive topics such as health, mental health or politics.
  • Advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter ChatGPT's responses.

OpenAI is also testing a format called Sponsored Agents, which lets a user chat with a business's own AI from an ad. It is in closed alpha.

03Ads vs Answers

Paid placement vs being recommended

The distinction that matters for brands: an ad buys a labeled slot under the answer. A recommendation is the answer. In our nine software teardowns, brands appeared 3,977 times across 900 ChatGPT answers, and only 2,470 of those appearances were recommendations. The brands it picks are selected from what it reads on the web: review sites, comparison pages, publishers and vendors' own pages.

No ad budget changes that selection, according to OpenAI. So the questions are separate. Ads can put you in front of people who asked about your category. Organic work decides whether the answer above the ad names you, and how. For how that side works, see how to get cited by ChatGPT and brand mentions.

04Should You Buy

When ChatGPT ads make sense

  • Measure first. Run your buyer questions and see whether ChatGPT already recommends you. If it does, an ad may be buying attention you already have.
  • Use ads where organic cannot reach. New products, new categories, and answers dominated by competitors are where paid placement adds something.
  • Mind the audience. Ads reach only Free and Go users. Many business buyers use paid or company plans that show no ads at all.
  • Keep sensitive categories in mind. Health and political topics are excluded from ad placement.

05FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT have ads?

Yes. OpenAI started testing ads in the US on February 9, 2026, for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. By September 2026 ads were available in more than 60 countries. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users do not see ads.

Do ads affect ChatGPT's answers?

OpenAI says no. Its help center states that advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter ChatGPT's responses. Ads appear below the end of a response and are labeled as sponsored.

How do I advertise on ChatGPT?

Through OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager, launched in beta on May 5, 2026, or through its agency and technology partners. Self-serve is available in the United States and a growing list of other countries.

Should I buy ChatGPT ads or work on organic visibility?

They do different jobs. Ads buy a labeled placement under an answer. Being recommended means the answer itself names you. Our data shows many answers name several brands and choose few, so the organic position is worth measuring before you decide what to spend.
