How to Get Cited by ChatGPT, and Recommended Rather Than Just Mentioned
To get cited by ChatGPT, your pages have to be reachable by OpenAI's search crawler, retrievable for the searches ChatGPT runs, and the clearest credible answer to the question being asked. Getting your brand recommended takes one more thing: other sources that say the same about you. This guide covers how ChatGPT picks its sources and seven concrete steps, using what we saw in 700 ChatGPT answers across seven software categories.

How ChatGPT chooses what to cite
When ChatGPT searches the web, it runs one or more searches, reads the pages that come back and writes an answer, linking some of those pages as sources. The pages come from OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's crawler documentation recommends allowing it for any site that wants to appear in ChatGPT search, and its publisher FAQ gives the same advice.
Which pages win? Our teardowns give a partial answer. In project management, about 60 percent of citation events went to vendors' own websites; in CRM it was 42 percent and in accounting 41 percent. In accounting, 27 percent went to review platforms and publishers, led by NerdWallet with 25 citations and Fit Small Business with 17. So the sources are a mix of your site, your competitors' sites and a handful of independent publishers, and the mix changes by category.
02Cited vs Recommended
Being cited is not the same as being recommended
A citation means ChatGPT used your page as evidence. A recommendation means it chose your brand for a stated need. They come apart more often than you might expect. In our payroll data, gusto.com was cited in 65 of 100 answers, and 48 of those answers were to questions that never mentioned Gusto. Meanwhile Paychex, one of the largest payroll providers in the country, was named in 29 answers and chosen in 5.
Aim for both. Citations get your framing into the answer; recommendations are what buyers act on.
03Seven Steps
How to get cited by ChatGPT
1. Let OAI-SearchBot in
Check robots.txt for rules that block OAI-SearchBot, and check your CDN or firewall too. Bot protection that blocks unfamiliar crawlers is a common silent cause of zero ChatGPT citations. OpenAI publishes the IP ranges its crawlers use so you can allow them. Blocking GPTBot, the training crawler, is a separate decision and does not affect search.
2. Be retrievable for the searches it runs
ChatGPT can only cite what its searches find. Pages that are thin, orphaned or poorly indexed rarely surface. The ordinary work of making a page crawlable, clearly titled and relevant to the question still comes first.
3. Publish the facts buyers ask about
ChatGPT quotes what it can find. In our payment processing teardown, 57 of 100 answers cited a vendor's pricing or fees page and quoted the number on it. A company whose pricing sits behind a sales form gets priced from someone else's page, or not at all.
4. State your use case in one sentence
The brands ChatGPT picks are the ones with a clear, repeatable description of who they are for. Helcim was described as the "interchange-plus as volume grows" option in 29 of the 30 payment answers that named it. Put your one-sentence case on your own pages, in plain words, and repeat it consistently.
5. Write honest comparison pages
On head-to-head questions, ChatGPT usually explains when each option fits rather than naming a single winner: in payments, 21 of 30 head-to-head questions recommended both brands. A comparison page that says plainly when a competitor is the better choice gives the model a fair description of you in your own words.
6. Be on the third-party pages it reads
Find which review sites, comparison articles and publishers ChatGPT cites in your category, then make sure you are listed there, accurately and currently. This is slow work, and it is where much of the difference between being mentioned and being recommended comes from.
7. Measure it
Run a fixed list of buyer questions monthly, record whether you were cited, recommended, listed or absent, and track ChatGPT referral visits in analytics through the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag. Our AI visibility guide walks through the full method.
04Pitfalls
Common mistakes
- Blocking OAI-SearchBot by accident while trying to block training crawlers.
- Letting bot protection at the CDN reject OpenAI's crawlers without anyone noticing.
- Hiding pricing and specifics, then wondering why answers describe you vaguely.
- Publishing an llms.txt file and expecting it to help. Server logs show OpenAI rarely requests it; see our llms.txt guide.
- Paying for fake reviews or planted mentions. It violates platform rules and, for reviews, consumer protection law.
05Beyond ChatGPT
The same steps work across AI search
Almost everything above also applies to Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini: be crawlable, be the clearest source, and be corroborated. Our guide to ranking in Google AI Overviews covers the Google-specific rules, and our AI SEO program runs all of it across surfaces for clients.
06FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to be cited or ranked in ChatGPT?
Not in the answers themselves. OpenAI's published route for publishers is simply to let its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, access your site; there is no paid path to being cited.
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from citing me?
No. GPTBot collects training data. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI says blocking GPTBot does not affect search appearance. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is what would keep you out.
How do I know if ChatGPT is sending me traffic?
ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many of the links it shows, so visits appear in Google Analytics with chatgpt.com as the session source. Clicks are only part of the picture, though; many buyers read the answer and search for the brand later.
Why does ChatGPT cite my competitor's website for questions about my product?
Usually because their page answers the question more clearly than yours does. In our payroll data, gusto.com was cited in 65 of 100 answers, including many about competitors. The fix is a page that answers the question better, not a complaint.
How long does it take to start getting cited?
Crawler fixes can show up quickly once OAI-SearchBot recrawls your pages. Getting onto the third-party pages ChatGPT cites takes longer, often months. Measure against a fixed baseline so you can tell real movement from answer-to-answer variation.
Is being cited the same as being recommended?
No. A citation means your page was used as evidence. A recommendation means your brand was chosen for a stated need. You can be cited without being recommended, and recommended based on other people's pages. Track both.
