Perplexity SEO: How to Get Your Site Cited in Perplexity Answers

Perplexity is an answer engine that searches the web in real time and cites its sources with numbered links in every answer. That makes it one of the more transparent AI surfaces: you can see exactly which pages it used. It also means the work is familiar. To be cited you need to be crawlable, findable and the clearest answer to the question being asked.

01How It Works

How Perplexity builds an answer

Perplexity's help center says it searches the internet in real time and that each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources. Beyond describing its sources as authoritative articles, websites and journals, Perplexity has not published how it ranks or selects them.

Two crawlers matter, according to Perplexity's crawler documentation: PerplexityBot, which surfaces and links sites in Perplexity's results, follows robots.txt and is not used for model training; and Perplexity-User, which fetches a page when a user asks and generally ignores robots.txt because it acts on a user's request.

02How To

How to get cited on Perplexity

  • Allow PerplexityBot. Check robots.txt, and check that your CDN or firewall is not blocking it. Our guide to AI crawlers has a starting configuration.
  • Answer the question in the first lines. Perplexity quotes and summarizes passages. A page that states the answer plainly near the top is easier to use than one that builds up to it.
  • Be specific. Numbers, dates, prices and named examples give an answer engine something concrete to cite. Vague pages rarely get chosen when a specific one exists.
  • Keep pages current. Perplexity searches live. Out-of-date pricing or feature lists get passed over, or worse, repeated.
  • Show up where Perplexity already looks. Run your buyers' questions in Perplexity and read the citations. The review sites, comparison pages and publications it cites for your category are where your brand needs to be described accurately.
  • Track it by question. Keep a fixed list of questions and check them regularly. Answers vary, so count how often you appear across many questions rather than reacting to one.

Where Perplexity fits

Perplexity is one AI surface among several, and each cites a different mix of sources. On the same 700 software questions, ChatGPT took about half its citations from vendor sites while Google's AI Overviews took about one in six (YouTube in AI Overviews vs ChatGPT). Check what Perplexity cites in your category before assuming it behaves like either.

Running that measurement across Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google, and acting on it, is what an AI SEO program does.

04FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How does Perplexity choose its sources?

Perplexity says it searches the web in real time and gathers information from authoritative sources such as articles, websites and journals, with numbered citations in each answer. It has not published a detailed ranking method, so treat any precise formula you read with suspicion.

Should I allow PerplexityBot?

Yes, if you want to appear in Perplexity. Perplexity says PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in its search results, follows robots.txt, and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.

Does Perplexity use Google results?

Perplexity does not publish which indexes it relies on beyond its own crawler and live web search. Ranking well in Google makes your pages easier to find for any system that searches the web, but it is not a guarantee of citation.

What is the Perplexity Publishers Program?

A program Perplexity launched in July 2024 that shares revenue with participating publishers when their content is referenced, starting with outlets such as TIME, Fortune and Der Spiegel. It is for publishers, not a way for brands to buy placement.
