Reddit SEO and AI Visibility: What Reddit Can and Cannot Do for Your Brand

Reddit is one of the most visible sites in Google search, and it has licensed its content to both Google and OpenAI. That has made "do Reddit" a standard piece of AI SEO advice. Our data adds a big caveat. On the same 700 commercial software questions, Reddit ranked in Google's top ten for 631 and in the top three for 515, while ChatGPT's web-search answers mentioned Reddit zero times. Reddit matters, but not everywhere, and not in the way the advice usually implies.

01Google

Reddit in Google search

Reddit threads now appear across a wide range of Google results. For the 700 commercial software questions in our teardowns, such as "best CRM software" and "Gusto alternatives," a Reddit URL ranked in Google's top ten for 631 of them, 90 percent, and in the top three for 515. Google's AI Overviews appeared on 647 of those questions and cited Reddit in 112, about one in six. The full breakdown is in our research note, Reddit in Google vs ChatGPT.

Google also has a data relationship with Reddit. In February 2024, Reddit and Google announced an agreement giving Google access to Reddit content for training its AI models and improving products such as Search; Reuters reported it at roughly $60 million a year. For Google search and Google's AI features, Reddit is clearly part of the picture.

02ChatGPT

Reddit in ChatGPT answers: what we found

OpenAI announced its own partnership with Reddit in May 2024. So we expected Reddit to show up in ChatGPT's answers. It did not. For the same 700 questions, ChatGPT with web search produced 2,311 citation events, none pointing to reddit.com, and not one answer mentioned Reddit even in passing.

The caveat: these were commercial software questions, run once each, logged out, in the United States, so the result describes that sample and not every kind of question. Aggregated ChatGPT datasets that mix many prompt types over longer periods do show Reddit among the most-cited sources in many categories, which the research note discusses. But because the Google results and ChatGPT answers are for the same questions, collected the same day, the contrast is direct: for commercial software questions, ChatGPT built its answers from vendor sites, review sites and comparison pages, not Reddit threads. Our AI citations guide shows exactly where those citations went.

03Strategy

What this means for your Reddit strategy

  • Treat Reddit as a Google surface first. If Reddit threads rank for your buyers' questions, being accurately represented in them puts you in front of searchers.
  • Do not assume it reaches every AI answer. Check which sources the AI tools actually cite for your category before putting Reddit at the center of an AI visibility plan.
  • Participate honestly or not at all. Disclose your affiliation, answer the question asked, follow each subreddit's rules.
  • Fix inaccuracies with facts. If a popular thread gets your pricing or features wrong, a transparent correction from an identified employee is usually welcome.
  • Measure per surface. Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini draw on different sources. Our AI visibility guide explains how to track them separately.

04Pitfalls

Common mistakes

  • Buying upvotes, aged accounts or planted comments.
  • Posting promotional links in communities that ban them.
  • Treating Reddit mentions as a proxy for AI visibility without checking what the AI tools cite.
  • Ignoring the threads that already rank for your brand name.

If you want a view of which sources shape answers in your specific category, that is part of the baseline in our AI SEO program.

05FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Does Reddit help SEO?

Reddit threads rank prominently in many Google results, so a helpful, accurate presence in the threads that rank for your category can put your brand in front of searchers. It does not pass much ranking value to your own site; its value is visibility where people already look.

Does ChatGPT use Reddit?

OpenAI has a partnership with Reddit, announced in May 2024, that gives it access to Reddit content. But in the 700 commercial software answers we logged with ChatGPT web search in September 2026, none of the 2,311 citations linked to reddit.com and no answer mentioned Reddit. Aggregated samples of ChatGPT answers collected over longer periods do show Reddit as a common source, so results depend on how you sample. Use of Reddit data and citing Reddit in a live answer are different things.

Can I post about my own product on Reddit?

Most subreddits restrict self-promotion, and each sets its own rules. Disclose who you are, answer the question that was asked, and read the rules first. Undisclosed promotion tends to be removed and can damage trust in your brand.

Should I pay for Reddit upvotes or planted comments?

No. It breaks Reddit's rules, communities are good at spotting it, and fake endorsements can create legal risk. It also targets the wrong goal if your buyers use AI tools that, in our data, do not cite Reddit at all.

Is Reddit worth it for B2B companies?

It depends on whether your buyers discuss your category there. Check which threads rank for your commercial questions in Google, and whether your brand is described accurately in them, before investing time.
