AI Citations: How AI Answers Choose Their Sources

An AI citation is a source that an AI system links or names as evidence for its answer. Citations are the one part of an AI answer you can observe from the outside, which makes them the best evidence we have about what these systems read. We logged 2,311 citations across 700 ChatGPT answers in seven software categories. About half pointed to vendors' own websites, and only 29 percent came from domains that ranked in Google's top ten for the same question. Here is what that means for anyone trying to be one of the sources.

01Definition

What AI citations are

When ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on web pages, they show some of those pages as links, footnotes or source cards. Those are citations. They are not the same as recommendations: a citation says "this page supported the answer," while a recommendation says "this brand is the one to choose."

Citations matter for two reasons. They are the pages whose framing and facts end up in the answer, and they are the part of an otherwise opaque process you can actually measure.

02Original Data

Where 2,311 ChatGPT citations came from

Across seven teardowns we ran 100 commercial software questions per category through ChatGPT with web search, logged every cited domain once per answer, and classed each as a vendor's own site, a review site or recognized publisher, or another third-party page. We also recorded whether each cited domain ranked in Google's top ten for the same question.

Three patterns stand out:

  • Vendor sites carry about half the evidence. Between 41 and 61 percent of citations went to vendors' own pages, depending on the category. Your site is a real source, not just a destination.
  • The third-party mix changes by category. Accounting leaned on recognized publishers, with 81 of 302 citations going to review sites and publishers such as NerdWallet and Fit Small Business. CRM and help desk leaned on a long tail of smaller comparison sites.
  • Google's top ten is a minority of the evidence. Only 674 of 2,311 citations, 29 percent, came from domains in Google's top ten for the same question. Rank tracking alone misses most of what ChatGPT reads.

03Mechanics

How AI systems choose what to cite

The pattern behind those numbers is the retrieval process. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode can run many related searches across subtopics, a technique it calls query fan-out, and then link to pages that support the answer. ChatGPT search fetches pages through OpenAI's search crawler. Either way, a page is cited when it is retrieved for one of those searches and supports a specific point in the answer: a price, a definition, a comparison, a fit for a use case.

That explains why so many citations come from outside the top ten for the original question. The system is not reading one results page. It is assembling evidence from several narrower searches.

04How To

How to earn more AI citations

  • Be retrievable. Allow the search crawlers that matter (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Googlebot). See our AI crawlers guide.
  • Publish the specifics. Prices, plans, limits, integrations and who the product suits. In payments, 57 of 100 answers cited a vendor pricing or fees page and quoted the number on it.
  • Write the pages answers are built from. Honest comparisons, alternatives pages and use-case pages give the model evidence for specific claims.
  • Earn a place on the category's go-to third-party pages. Find which publishers and comparison sites your category's answers cite, and make sure you are there, accurately.
  • Measure citations and recommendations separately. Our AI visibility guide covers the method.

05FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI citation?

A link or named source that an AI system shows as the evidence behind its answer. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode all show citations when they draw on web pages.

Do AI citations send traffic?

Some, but less than a classic ranking. In a Pew Research Center study, people clicked a link inside Google's AI summaries on just 1 percent of visits. The larger value is that your page shapes the answer and your brand is seen as a source.

Why does ChatGPT cite sites that do not rank in Google?

Because it runs its own searches, often several per question, and picks the pages that best support specific points in its answer. In our data, only 29 percent of citation events came from domains in Google's top ten for the same question.

Can I see which AI citations my site gets?

Partly. ChatGPT tags many outbound links with utm_source=chatgpt.com, so clicks show up in analytics. For citations that are not clicked, you need to sample answers directly for a fixed set of questions.

Are citations the same as recommendations?

No. A page can be cited without its brand being recommended, and a brand can be recommended on the strength of other sites' pages. Track both separately.
