ChatGPT vs Google: How Their Answers Differ, in Data From 1,000 Questions

ChatGPT and Google answer the same questions from mostly different parts of the web. We have asked both systems the same questions more than a thousand times: 900 software buying questions in our teardowns and 100 questions in fintech, healthcare, legal and ecommerce. The overlap between what ChatGPT cites and what Google ranks is small in every category we have measured. Here is what the data shows and what it means for being found in both.

01The Data

How often ChatGPT and Google agree

In our four-industry study, we asked ChatGPT (web search on) and Google 100 buyer questions on the same evening:

MeasureResult
Google showed an AI Overview94 of 100 questions
ChatGPT cited sites that ranked in Google's top ten27%
ChatGPT cited sites that also appeared in Google's AI Overview20%
AI Overview links from sites in Google's own top ten50%
Reddit: in Google's top ten / cited by ChatGPT68 questions / 0 answers

Software looks the same. Across our nine teardowns, between 19 and 43 percent of ChatGPT's citations came from domains in Google's top ten for the question, and about 70 percent of its recommendations went to brands whose own site did not rank there.

02Why

Why the answers differ

  • Different retrieval. ChatGPT search rewrites the question into its own searches, sends them to partner search providers, and picks what to cite; its crawler, OAI-SearchBot, controls whether a site can appear at all. Google ranks its own index and builds AI Overviews from searches it runs across subtopics, which is query fan-out.
  • Different taste in sources. Google's results lean on forums and video: Reddit ranked for most of our questions and YouTube was the most-linked site in AI Overviews on software questions. ChatGPT cited neither. It leaned on vendors' own pages, review sites, publishers and, for money and health questions, government sources.
  • Different output. Google shows a list of links with an optional summary on top. ChatGPT writes an answer, usually naming a few brands, and often picks one for each type of buyer.

03By Industry

The pattern in four industries

  • Fintech: ChatGPT cited NerdWallet and the CFPB's consumerfinance.gov most. Google's top ten was dominated by Reddit. See fintech.
  • Healthcare: a third of ChatGPT's cited sites were government health sites. Google ranked major health systems and showed YouTube in its Overviews. See healthcare.
  • Legal: the American Bar Association was ChatGPT's top source. Google leaned on legal directories and Reddit. See law firms.
  • Ecommerce: ChatGPT cited product testing publishers. Google's Overviews linked to Google's own product listings in 21 of 25 answers. See ecommerce.

04What To Do

How to be found in both

  • Keep the foundation. Crawlable, indexable pages that state clearly who you are for and what you cost help in both systems. Allow OAI-SearchBot as well as Googlebot; see AI crawlers.
  • Measure each system separately. Track your key questions in Google and ChatGPT as two lists. A blended score hides that they disagree. See AI visibility.
  • Earn presence where each one reads. For Google that often means video and community discussion. For ChatGPT it means the review sites, comparison pages and publishers it cites in your category.
  • Do not assume rankings carry over. A page in Google's top three can be absent from ChatGPT's answer, and the reverse.

Running both halves as one program is what AI SEO means in practice.

05FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT replacing Google?

Not in the sense of one taking over the other's job. Google now puts its own AI answers on top of most buyer questions: AI Overviews appeared on 94 of 100 questions in our four-industry study. The shift is that buyers use both, and the two give different answers.

Does ChatGPT use Google results?

Not directly. OpenAI says ChatGPT search rewrites a question into one or more searches and sends them to third-party search providers, naming Microsoft among them, while its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, decides whether a site can appear. The result differs from Google's ranking: only 27 percent of the sites ChatGPT cited in our industry study ranked in Google's top ten for the same question.

Why does ChatGPT recommend brands that do not rank on Google?

Because it reads different pages. Across our nine software teardowns, about 70 percent of ChatGPT's recommendations went to brands whose own site did not rank in Google's top ten for the question. Their names came from review sites, comparison pages and publishers instead.

Should I optimize for ChatGPT or Google?

Both, measured separately. The foundations overlap: crawlable pages, clear facts, strong third-party coverage. But the sources each system cites differ enough that one number blending the two hides where you are winning and losing.
