Featured Snippets: How Google Picks Them, How to Opt Out, and How They Relate to AI Overviews

A featured snippet is the highlighted excerpt Google shows above or within its results when a single page answers a question well. Google chooses them automatically; there is no markup or request that earns one. In 2026 they sit alongside AI Overviews, which answer many of the same questions in a different way. Here is what Google says about both.

01How They Work

How Google chooses featured snippets

Google's featured snippets documentation says its systems determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a given search. Asked how to mark a page as a featured snippet, its answer is that you cannot.

Clicking a featured snippet takes the reader straight to the quoted section of the page. Snippets can also appear inside the related questions box better known as People Also Ask: expanding a question there shows a snippet, and Google says you cannot control what appears in that box.

02Opting Out

How to opt out

  • nosnippet blocks all snippets from a page, including featured snippets. It is the only method Google guarantees.
  • data-nosnippet excludes specific parts of a page from snippets.
  • max-snippet limits snippet length, but Google says lowering it is not guaranteed to remove a featured snippet.

Be careful: the same controls limit how your content appears in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and in normal results. Since August 2026 there is a separate Search Console setting for leaving Google's generative AI features; see AI crawlers.

03AI Overviews

Featured snippets and AI Overviews

Featured snippets quote one page. AI Overviews, now part of one experience with AI Mode, write a summary from several searches and link to the pages they used. That difference shows in the data: in our software study, only 55 percent of AI Overview links came from domains in the organic top ten, while a featured snippet is normally taken from a page that already ranks.

The skill that wins both is the same: answer a specific question directly and completely, on a page that deserves to be trusted. See how to rank in AI Overviews.

04How To

How to write for snippets and summaries

  • One question, one clear answer. State the answer in the first sentence under a heading that matches the question.
  • Then add depth. Steps, a short table, or the conditions under which the answer changes.
  • Rank first. Featured snippets usually come from pages already on page one; fix relevance and quality before formatting.
  • Keep it current. Dated facts lose snippets and citations to fresher pages.

Writing this way across a whole subject is part of AI SEO done properly.

05FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a featured snippet?

You cannot request one. Google says its systems decide whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a search. What you can do is answer a specific question clearly and near the top of a page that already ranks well for it.

How do I stop Google showing a featured snippet from my page?

Use the nosnippet rule to block all snippets, or data-nosnippet on specific text. Google says lowering max-snippet is not guaranteed to remove a featured snippet. Snippet controls also limit use in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

What is the difference between a featured snippet and an AI Overview?

A featured snippet quotes one page. An AI Overview writes a new summary from several pages and links to them. Both favor pages that answer a question directly, but AI Overviews often link pages that do not rank in the top ten.

How is People Also Ask related to featured snippets?

Google's documentation says featured snippets can also appear inside the related questions box, known as People Also Ask. Expanding a question there shows a snippet from a page. Google says you cannot control what shows up in that box.
