Zero-Click Search: What It Is, How Big It Has Gotten, and What to Do About It
A zero-click search is a search that ends without the searcher clicking through to any website, either because the answer was on the results page or because they searched again instead. It is now the majority of Google searches. SparkToro's June 2026 study found that 68 percent of US Google searches in the first four months of 2026 ended without a click. Here is what drives it, which searches it affects most, and how to market and measure when the answer increasingly lives on Google's page or in an AI reply.

01The Data
How big zero-click search has gotten
| Year | Share of US Google searches with no click | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | 49% | SparkToro |
| 2024 | 60.45% | SparkToro (as reported in its 2026 study) |
| January to April 2026 | 68.01% | SparkToro, Similarweb clickstream panel |
The trend is steady and long-running. The figures come from clickstream panels, and the 2024 and 2026 numbers use different data providers, so treat small differences with caution. The direction is not in doubt. Source: SparkToro, June 9, 2026.
AI summaries push the number higher. In a Pew Research Center study of 900 US adults' browsing in March 2025, people clicked a traditional result on 8 percent of visits when an AI summary appeared and 15 percent when it did not. They clicked a link inside the summary on 1 percent of visits, and ended their browsing session 26 percent of the time after a summary, against 16 percent without.
02Causes
What drives zero-click searches
- Answers on the results page. Featured snippets, knowledge panels, calculators, weather, sports scores and now AI Overviews.
- Refinement. Many searches end in another search rather than a click, as people rephrase or narrow down.
- Satisfied intent. Some questions only need a fact. A click would add nothing.
- AI assistants. Buyers increasingly ask ChatGPT or Perplexity, read the answer, and never run a Google search at all.
03Who It Hits
Which searches still click
Zero-click behavior is concentrated in quick, factual questions. Searches where people need depth, want to compare options or are ready to act, such as pricing, reviews, "best X for Y" and comparisons, still send clicks, though fewer than before. That is where most businesses make their money, which is why zero-click search is a bigger problem for publishers than for companies selling a product.
04What To Do
How to market in a zero-click world
1. Be the name in the answer
When the answer is the destination, the win is being named in it. An AI summary that recommends your brand produces value even without a click, because buyers remember the name and search for it later. Our guides on AI Overviews and ChatGPT citations cover how.
2. Rebalance toward searches that still click
Put more effort into commercial and comparison queries where people need detail, and less into thin informational content written only to capture traffic.
3. Change what you measure
Clicks alone will undercount your visibility. Track impressions, branded search volume, direct traffic, and whether your brand is recommended in AI answers for a fixed set of questions. Our AI visibility guide lays out a method.
4. Give people a reason to click
Original data, tools, detailed comparisons and pricing are things a summary cannot fully replace. Our own teardowns publish full datasets for this reason.
05Perspective
What zero-click does not mean
It does not mean search has stopped mattering. Google has said it handles more than 5 trillion searches a year, and its AI features are built on the same ranking systems as the classic results. It means the value of search is moving from the visit toward the mention. Companies that measure only clicks will think they are losing when they may simply be winning somewhere their reports do not look. 06FAQs
Frequently asked questions
What is an example of a zero-click search?
Searching "time in Tokyo" and reading the answer at the top of the page, or reading an AI Overview that answers your question and then leaving. In both cases the search ends without a visit to any website.
Are zero-click searches bad for my business?
They reduce traffic from informational searches, which hurts sites that depend on ad views. For businesses that sell something, the damage is smaller if your brand is the one named in the answer, because buyers often come back through a branded search later.
How do I see zero-click searches in Search Console?
You cannot see them directly. Look for queries with high impressions and low click-through rates, especially question-style queries. Rising impressions with flat clicks is the usual pattern.
Do AI Overviews cause zero-click searches?
They add to it. In Pew Research Center's panel, people were much less likely to click a result when an AI summary appeared and more likely to end their browsing session. But zero-click searches were already about half of all Google searches in 2019, before AI Overviews existed.
Which searches still get clicks?
Complex, commercial and comparison searches, where people want detail, pricing or to act. Quick facts and simple definitions are the most likely to end without a click.
