HIGH SALIENCE / GENERATIVE ENGINE OPTIMIZATION AGENCY
Generative Engine Optimization Agency for Category Leaders
High Salience is a generative engine optimization (GEO) agency helping established brands increase visibility, citations and recommendations across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and other AI search systems. GEO is what we do when the surface generating the answer is a language model instead of a results page, and we measure the outcome against your competitors, query by query.
01Definition
What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring digital content and managing a brand's wider web presence so that generative AI systems (ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot) include, cite and recommend the brand in the answers they produce. It works on three fronts at once: content machines can retrieve and quote, entity signals machines can resolve, and third-party sources machines already trust.
02The Role
What does a GEO agency actually do?
A GEO agency measures how generative systems currently answer a market's commercial questions, then engineers the inputs those answers are built from. In practice that means benchmarking brand visibility against competitors across the AI surfaces, restructuring content so its passages can be retrieved and quoted, consolidating the entity signals that let machines resolve the brand, and winning accurate presence in the third-party sources those systems cite. The output is not a report about AI. It is movement in the answers your buyers actually see.
03The Skeptic's Question
Is generative engine optimization a real thing?
Yes, with an honest caveat. Generative answers are demonstrably influenced by measurable inputs: whether content can be retrieved and extracted, whether the brand resolves as a clear entity, and how often trusted third-party sources corroborate it. Those inputs can be engineered, and the results can be measured by sampling real queries over time. What is not real is guaranteed placement. Any GEO agency promising specific citations in a system it doesn't control is describing a slot machine as a vending machine.
Our position: treat it as an evidence problem. Measure the answers, engineer the inputs, remeasure, keep what moves. The methodology is public on our Category Salience page, and our research program exists to test claims like these in the open.
04GEO vs SEO vs AEO
GEO vs SEO vs AEO: what's the difference?
SEO earns rankings on the classic results page. Answer engine optimization (AEO) wins presence inside direct answers: featured snippets, voice responses, AI answer boxes. GEO is the broadest of the three: shaping how generative systems synthesize, describe and recommend a brand across long-form AI answers. In practice the three overlap heavily and draw on the same foundations, which is why buying them as three separate retainers mostly buys the same work three times.
GEO does not replace SEO. Generative systems retrieve from the same indexed web that Google ranks, so organic strength remains one of the inputs. One buying journey now crosses both surfaces; we engineer for the journey, not for one interface.
05Approach
How High Salience approaches GEO
We run GEO inside the same five-layer model as everything else we do: demand, retrieval, authority, sources, conversion. The intelligence phase builds your commercial query universe and baselines who the generative systems currently name. The intervention phase attacks the layers where the evidence says you're losing. The remeasurement phase tells us what moved. Map. Intervene. Remeasure. Interventions that shift recommendation share get more investment; ones that don't get cut.
06The Program
What our GEO program includes
AI visibility and competitor benchmarking
Your real commercial queries sampled across the generative surfaces: who gets named, how you're described, which sources are cited and what share each competitor holds.
Technical GEO and retrieval engineering
Crawler access for AI agents, indexation, schema and passage architecture so generative systems can find, extract and quote the right information about you.
Content optimized for AI retrieval
Definitions, comparisons and proof points rebuilt as clean, self-contained passages under question-led headings: the units generative systems actually extract.
Entity authority and third-party citations
Consistent entity signals that make the brand safe to recommend, plus accurate presence in the citation sources generative engines keep returning to.
Digital PR and source authority
Campaigns that earn coverage, mentions and links in the publishers, review platforms and comparison sources that shape your category's answers. The full discipline lives at Source Authority.
Remeasurement against baseline
The same query set, resampled on a schedule, with the raw answers retained. You see what moved, what didn't and what we changed because of it.
07Measurement
How we measure GEO performance
Every engagement tracks the same inspectable measurements, sampled against a fixed query set:
- Recommendation share: the portion of category answers that name you
- Mention and citation frequency: how often you appear, and how often documents representing you get cited
- Competitive share of answer: your presence measured against named competitors, not in isolation
- Description accuracy and sentiment: whether the systems say what a good salesperson would say
- AI referral traffic and assisted pipeline: the revenue trail, from your own analytics and CRM
No single mystery score. Every number can be re-derived from the data behind it. Read our current AI search research →
08Fit
Who our GEO program is built for
Established brands in categories where recommendation and comparison influence revenue: B2B software, professional services, considered purchases. You should have meaningful search demand, a team that can execute, and the intent to own a category rather than rent a deliverable. If you're pre-product-market fit or shopping for guaranteed placements, we'll save you the call: that's not this.
09Investment
What does a GEO engagement cost?
Strategic engagements begin at $7,500/month; full market-capture programs typically range from $10,000–$20,000+/month depending on market size, competitive intensity and how much execution sits with High Salience versus your team. Every engagement starts with the Category Salience Brief, so the scope is priced from evidence about your market rather than a template.
10FAQs
Generative engine optimization FAQs
How long does a GEO engagement take to show results?
Baseline measurement lands in the first weeks. Movement in generative answers follows the underlying inputs: on-site structure changes can be re-retrieved within weeks of recrawling, while entity consolidation and third-party source presence build over months. We report against the baseline on a fixed schedule rather than promising a date, because the honest answer depends on your category's sources and your starting authority.
Is GEO worth it while AI referral traffic is still small?
That depends on your category and evidence, which is why we measure before we recommend. Published analyses so far show AI referral volume is small but unusually high intent, and generative answers increasingly shape shortlists before a click ever happens. The commercial case is the buyers who arrive pre-sold, not the session count.
Do I need GEO if I already rank first in Google?
Ranking helps but does not guarantee inclusion. Generative systems retrieve passages and weigh corroborating sources, so a top-ranked page with unextractable structure, weak entity signals or no third-party corroboration can still be skipped. The reverse also holds: well-structured, well-cited brands can appear in answers without holding the top organic position.
Can we do GEO in-house?
Parts of it, yes: retrievable content structure and schema are execution work a strong team can own. What is hard to replicate in-house is the measurement infrastructure and the source intelligence: sampling real answers at scale, isolating what moved after a change, and knowing which third-party sources actually get cited in your category. That intelligence layer is where we spend most of our time.
What deliverables does a GEO agency provide?
From High Salience: a generative answer baseline against named competitors, a ranked intervention plan, rebuilt page and passage structure, entity and schema implementation, a source and citation campaign, and scheduled remeasurement with the query set and raw answers included. You get the evidence, not a single mystery score.
